T124 | LAND AND FREEDOM
The
latest in our "Freedom Fighters" series honors the
fiery, flamboyant hero of the Mexican Revolution of
1910. Known as the "Little Tiger," Emiliano Zapata
lead a guerrilla army against the Mexican state which
protected wealthy landowners under the hacienda
system. Zapata was betrayed and murdered in April 1919,
but death could hardly crush his spirit. Today, the
"Zapatistas" of southern Mexico, who take their name
from Zapata, carry on his struggle for land, freedom and
dignity.
The front
design symbolizes the hand-shaped birthmark which Zapata
bore on his chest. Women in his village, anticipating
his greatness, said the mark represented the "hand of
God." The words, "Tierra, Libertad" (Land, Freedom)
remember Zapata's rallying cry, inherited from the
anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón.
Viva
Zapata. The "Little Tiger" roars.
